Notting Hill Carnival, held each August bank holiday weekend, is Europe's biggest street party, colour, sound systems and a million-strong crowd across west London. From Buckinghamshire it is about an hour away, but the area is closed to traffic and rammed for the weekend. Here is how to get there, and crucially, home again.
- Carnival fills west London (W11) each August bank holiday weekend, with extensive road closures.
- It's around 55–75 minutes from Gerrards Cross, but you cannot drive into the carnival area.
- Plan a drop-off and pickup at the edge of the closures, agreed in advance with your driver.
When and where is the Carnival?
Notting Hill Carnival takes place over the August bank holiday weekend in and around Notting Hill, W11, in west London. Sunday is traditionally family day and Monday the main parade, both drawing vast crowds. The streets at the heart of it are closed to traffic and packed solid for the duration.
How do you get there from Buckinghamshire?
West London is around 55–75 minutes from Gerrards Cross via the M40 and A40, but you cannot drive into the carnival itself, the whole area is closed. The practical approach is a drop-off at the edge of the closures and a walk in, with a collection point agreed for later.
How do you get home afterwards?
Getting home is the hard part: the area is heaving, transport is overwhelmed, and finding a cab on the night is near impossible. A pre-booked car, collecting you from an agreed point a little outside the closures at a set time, is the reliable way back to the Chilterns when everyone else is struggling.
Why pre-book for Carnival?
Carnival is exactly the kind of high-demand, road-closed event where spontaneity fails. A planned drop-off and pickup at sensible points, booked in advance at a fixed price, turns a logistically daunting day into a manageable one. See our fixed-price service.
