Southampton's cruise port is roughly 70 miles from Gerrards Cross, and we allow around 90 minutes for the drive down the M3. The port has five cruise terminals spread across the Western and Eastern Docks, each with its own dock gate, and they can all have ships alongside on the same day. So the two things to get right are the time you leave and the terminal you are going to. This guide covers both, along with luggage and the journey home.

How long does it take to get to Southampton cruise port?
From Gerrards Cross the route runs round the M25 to the M3 and south past Basingstoke and Winchester towards Southampton. It is about 70 miles, and around 90 minutes is a realistic allowance in normal traffic, as on our long-distance taxi distance table. Summer Saturdays can be busy on the M3, so we plan to arrive comfortably inside your check-in slot rather than at its start.
Which cruise terminal is your ship using?
Southampton's port operator, Associated British Ports, lists five cruise terminals (Southampton VTS, ABParking directions, correct as of September 2026):

The terminal is allocated by the port and printed in your cruise documents; check it for every sailing rather than relying on a previous trip. The port publishes a live cruise ship schedule on the Southampton VTS cruise schedule, though it warns that the schedule is provisional.
What is the last part of the route?
The Western Docks and Eastern Docks are approached differently, which is why the terminal matters for the final few miles. For the Western Docks terminals (City, Horizon and Mayflower), ABParking's directions from the M3 are to join the M27 westbound, leave at Junction 3 for the M271 towards the docks, then take the A33 at the Redbridge roundabout into Southampton to the assigned dock gate. For Ocean and QEII in the Eastern Docks, the entrance is Dock Gate 4, and QEII is about a mile further inside along Test Road. A driver who has the terminal from the booking goes straight to the right gate rather than following signs for the wrong ship.
How does luggage work at embarkation?
Cruise passengers usually hand hold luggage to porters at the terminal kerb, and it is delivered to the cabin later. At Southampton, baggage for P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess Cruises is handled by The Baggage Handling Company, while Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises use Intercruises Shoreside and Port Services (Southampton VTS). Keep medication, documents, valuables and anything you need that afternoon in hand luggage, because cases can take some time to reach the cabin. Label every bag with the tags your cruise line sends before you leave home, so the driver can hand them straight over.
Should you drive and park at the port instead?
Parking is available: ABParking runs secure onsite parking for passengers on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Fred. Olsen, MSC, Disney, Silversea, NCL, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas, and other lines arrange their own options. The trade-off is the cost of parking for the length of a one- or two-week voyage and the 90-minute drive home on disembarkation morning, often straight after an early breakfast and a queue for your cases. What time should you leave home?
Your cruise line gives you an arrival or check-in slot, and arriving before it usually means waiting. Work back from the start of the slot and add around 90 minutes plus a margin for the M3. For a 12:00 slot, a pickup from Gerrards Cross at about 10:00 is sensible; on a summer Saturday, make it 09:45. If the ship sails from the Eastern Docks, allow a few extra minutes for the drive inside the port to QEII.
How does the collection work on the way home?
Disembarkation typically happens in the morning, and you collect your cases in the terminal before leaving. Tell us the ship, terminal and your disembarkation group or expected time when you book, and update us from the ship if anything changes. The driver waits for you rather than circling the dock gate, so you can walk out to the car with your luggage and head home up the M3.
Which vehicle suits a cruise party?
Cruise luggage is heavier than most holidays, with formal clothes and longer trips. Tell us the number of large cases rather than just the number of passengers. For a family or two couples travelling together, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats seven, and the Ford Tourneo takes eight, so the whole party arrives together. Child seats are available on request.
