From the Chalfonts, Gatwick is a long airport run whichever way you do it. By car it takes around 80–95 minutes from Chalfont St Peter, 82–97 minutes from Chalfont St Giles and 85–100 minutes from Little Chalfont. By public transport it is closer to an hour and three-quarters. This article compares the realistic options for each village: a booked car, the train, a lift from family, or driving and parking yourself.
- Little Chalfont has the best rail option: the Metropolitan line to Farringdon connects with Thameslink trains straight to Gatwick, one change in all.
- Chalfont St Giles has no station, and Chalfont St Peter's nearest is Gerrards Cross, so rail from those villages starts with a lift or a bus.
- A lift to Gatwick and back costs the driver more than five hours of driving across the two trips, which is often the deciding factor.
How long does each Chalfont take to reach Gatwick?
By car, the difference between the three villages is how far you travel before joining the motorway. These are the times on our local airport pages, and all three routes finish round the M25 to the M23.

Option 1: a pre-booked car from your door
This is the only option with no changes and no timing gaps. The driver collects you from the house, loads the cases, and takes the A413 or A404 towards the M25 depending on the village. The fare is fixed before you travel, so a slow M25 does not change the price. On the way home the driver follows your flight and waits in arrivals, with free waiting included on international arrivals.
It is the natural choice for early departures. A 07:00 flight means being at Gatwick around 05:00, which from Little Chalfont means leaving at about 03:15; there is no public transport that gets you there in time. For a family, a Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats seven and the SEAT Alhambra six, with child seats on request.
Option 2: the train
From Little Chalfont
Chalfont & Latimer station gives Little Chalfont a genuinely useful route. In TfL Journey Planner searches for September 2026, a Metropolitan line train to Farringdon took about 55 minutes, then a Thameslink train to Gatwick Airport about 40 minutes, for around 1 hour 45 minutes with a single change. Other results went via Finchley Road and the Jubilee line to London Bridge for Thameslink (about 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 40 minutes), or by Chiltern Railways to Marylebone and on to Victoria for the Gatwick Express.
The Farringdon route is the one to know if you are travelling light: one change, no Underground-to-Underground transfer, and a train that arrives at Gatwick's station in the South Terminal. The catch is the start time. The earliest weekday result we found left Chalfont & Latimer at 05:29 and reached Gatwick at 07:14, too late for most morning flights.
From Chalfont St Peter
Rail starts at Gerrards Cross station, about 1.2 miles away. From there, TfL searches took 87 to 100 minutes to Gatwick by Chiltern Railways to Marylebone and then the Victoria line to Victoria, or the Jubilee line to London Bridge for Thameslink. That is two changes, plus getting to Gerrards Cross first.
From Chalfont St Giles
The village has no station, so rail means a lift or bus to Chalfont & Latimer or Gerrards Cross before the journey begins. By the time you add that first leg, the train rarely makes sense for Gatwick unless you are already heading into London.
Oyster and contactless work between London and Gatwick but not from stations outside London, so buy a through ticket (Gatwick Airport, correct as of September 2026).
Option 3: a lift from family or friends
It feels free, but look at it from the driver's side. From Chalfont St Giles, a drop-off means up to 97 minutes there and the same back; the collection a week later doubles it. That is over five hours on the M25 for someone else.
If they do drive you, Gatwick's forecourt charges £10 for 10 minutes, then £1 a minute to a 30-minute maximum, payable by midnight the day after; its Long Stay car parks give two hours free with a shuttle bus to the terminals, which also works for collections (Gatwick drop-off, correct as of September 2026). Option 4: drive and park at Gatwick
Driving yourself is quick in the early hours and gives you your car on the way home. The costs are the parking for every day you are away and the drive back after your flight, which after a long-haul overnight is the part people underestimate. Which option suits you?
- Little Chalfont, travelling light, mid-morning flight: the Metropolitan line and Thameslink via Farringdon.
- Any Chalfont, flight before 09:00: a booked car, because the first trains arrive too late.
- Family with hold luggage: a car sized for the cases, rather than a train with two or three changes.
- Short trip, one person, compliant car: driving and parking can work if the parking is booked ahead.
- Arriving late at night: a booked car; TfL's late-evening results from Gatwick to Chalfont & Latimer took around 1 hour 45 minutes and finished after midnight.
Is Gatwick the right airport from the Chalfonts?
Only if the flight is better.
