Why the Gatwick run from HP7 is nearly all M25

Gatwick is the awkward airport from this side of the Chilterns, because once you are on the motorway you stay on it. The village joins at M25 Junction 18, a couple of miles east along White Lion Road, and the journey from there is anticlockwise through the entire western side: Junction 16 where the M40 arrives, then the M4, Heathrow, the M3 and the A3, before dropping off at Junction 7 onto the M23 south. The airport lies a short way beyond M23 Junction 9 at the end of its own spur. Because a single carriageway carries so much of the trip, we look at the western M25 before setting off rather than halfway down it. If the Chorleywood end is slow at the start, the A413 south through Amersham and the Chalfonts to Denham puts you on the M40 at Junction 1 and the M25 at Junction 16. If the trouble is on the M23, the A23 London to Brighton road reaches the airport directly.

Collection times for the first flights

For a 6.10am departure you want to be at the terminal by about 4.10am. Take off up to 100 minutes of driving and a short buffer, and the car should leave Little Chalfont at around 2.20am. That sounds brutal, but at that hour the M25 is at its emptiest and most passengers sleep most of the way. The round-the-clock service is what makes these starts dependable, and for a run this long some people prefer something larger and quieter, which our chauffeur-driven cars provide on the same route.

Terminals, the shuttle and Gatwick's charge

Picking the wrong terminal is not the setback it would be at Heathrow: the free shuttle between North and South takes around two minutes and runs all night. We still check which one your airline uses. Anyone dropping off pays £10 for up to 10 minutes on the forecourt and £1 for each minute beyond, with 30 minutes the limit; our fare covers it. Nobody books 85–100 minutes each way for fun, so this route is holidays and long weekends almost end to end, with families off Snells Lane and couples on short breaks, and grandparents going down to meet an arrival.

By train, Chalfont & Latimer has both Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways services.
