Junction 8a, not junction 8: the Stansted route from the Chalfonts
Stansted is the longest of the five from HP7 and the route is motorway from end to end. Out of the village on the A404 through Chorleywood to M25 junction 18, then clockwise across the top of London: junction 21 where the M1 crosses, junction 23 for the A1(M), then onwards before peeling off at junction 27 onto the M11 north. The airport is signed off the M11, and the junction that matters is 8a, the one intended for traffic arriving from the London direction; Junction 8, with the A120, is the airport's advice for drivers coming down from the Cambridge side.
Travelling north you pass junction 8 at Birchanger before you reach 8a, and it links to the A120 towards the terminal, so if the 8a slip is shut, leaving a junction early is a real fallback rather than a gamble. The larger risk on this run is the north-eastern quadrant of the M25 between junctions 21 and 27. When that goes, the escape is the A414, which runs east through Hatfield, Hertford and Harlow and rejoins the M11 at junction 7. At the airport there is a single terminal and a single forecourt, with the departure gates reached by walkway or transit, so no terminal decision is needed on the way in.
From Little Chalfont it is mostly leisure travel on short-haul European routes, with a thinner stream of business passengers whose meeting happens to sit at the Essex end of things. What catches people out is the hour: a first-thing departure means leaving Burtons Lane or Bell Lane in the dark, and by the time a late Stansted arrival has cleared the terminal, the last train into Chalfont & Latimer went long ago.
Could you get to Stansted from Chalfont & Latimer by train?
Yes, with one change and a long ride. For a family, a 6am take-off or a late landing, the Underground leg with cases and the timetable at the ends of the day tip it back towards the car, and our luggage guide shows what fits in each vehicle.
