We come out of the village on the A413 southbound, join the A40 at Denham for M40 Junction 1, cross at Junction 1A and enter the M25 at Junction 16, then work clockwise past Junction 21 and Junction 23 and on to Junction 27 and the M11 north. The Junction 23 to 27 stretch has run as a smart motorway, with variable speed limits, since 2014.

From the London side the airport's exit is 8a and not 8; the airport points only Cambridge-side traffic at Junction 8. Northbound, Junction 8 at Birchanger comes just before 8a and also connects with the A120, so if the 8a slip is closed we leave one junction earlier and still reach the same forecourt. The bigger insurance policy sits further back. When the north-east corner of the M25 goes, the A414 runs east across Hertfordshire from Hemel Hempstead through St Albans, Hatfield and Hertford to Harlow, and joins the M11 at Junction 7.

At ninety minutes or more this is a proper drive, and the people booking it from Chalfont St Peter are usually flying somewhere Heathrow does not go directly, or on a schedule that only Stansted offers.
