Chalfont St Peter to Luton Taxi
Fixed-fare taxis from SL9 to London Luton Airport, typically 50–65 minutes, with the route chosen on the night's traffic.
Getting from Chalfont St Peter to Luton Airport
Expect 50–65 minutes by car. We have two ways onto the M25 from the village, south to Maple Cross or north via Chorleywood, and the driver picks whichever is clearer on the night. The fare stays as quoted either way.
Luton is the quickest of the airports north and east of London from the Chalfonts, and it is where most of the budget short-haul flying goes. That makes it the airport families here use for weekends away and half-term breaks, and the one where the car is usually booked for before dawn.
We pick up across the village: the centre around the Market Place, Gold Hill and Chalfont Common, Austenwood, Gravel Hill and the Misbourne valley roads, as well as Gerrards Cross station if that suits. Everyday taxis in Chalfont St Peter run from the same office.

The Luton route from SL9, and where it parts company with the others
Luton is the transfer where the usual M40 approach is not automatically the best one. The short version drops south on the A413 to Denham and then takes the A412 towards Maple Cross to meet the M25 clockwise at Junction 17, which skips the loop round Junction 16 entirely. When the A412 is stacked we invert it and head north instead, up the A413 through Amersham and east on the A404 through Little Chalfont and Chorleywood to Junction 18. Either entry puts us clockwise over the top of the M25 to Junction 21 for the M1, north to Junction 10, onto the airport spur, round Junction 10a and along the A1081 New Airport Way. One detail earns its keep on the final approach: at the roundabout before the tunnel, follow the signs for the drop-off and pick-up zone rather than whatever the sat-nav is insisting on, because the airport itself tells drivers to do exactly that. If the M1 is shut north of St Albans, the A1081 climbs up through London Colney and Harpenden and reaches the same New Airport Way from the south.
Fifty to sixty-five minutes makes Luton the quickest of the eastern airports from the Chalfonts, and the traffic it carries is mostly early low-cost departures and late-evening returns. Half-term flights from families around Chalfont Common and Gravel Hill, weekend breaks, a Belfast or Edinburgh hop for work, and the occasional student run in September. Because so many Luton departures leave before six, most of these are bookings for a car standing outside in the dark, which comes down to the driver being briefed the night before rather than dispatched on the morning. If you want the full picture of what we cover from the village, the village airport transfer page sets it out, and where the occasion calls for something quieter and better appointed, a chauffeur-driven car is available on the same fixed-price footing.
Is there a free drop-off at Luton Airport?
There is, but it is not at the terminal. The official free option is the Long Stay Car Park (postcode LU2 9NW), where you can stop for up to two hours without charge. A free shuttle bus runs from there every 20 minutes, around the clock, and takes roughly 10 minutes to reach the terminal.
The kerb nearest the building is the Drop Off and Pick Up Zone, about a five-minute walk from the doors. It costs £9 for the first 12 minutes and £1 a minute after that, up to 30 minutes, and the charge has to be paid online by midnight the following day. Stay beyond 30 minutes and the penalty is £95, reduced to £55 if paid within 14 days.
With a GX car, none of that is your problem. The driver uses the zone, the charge is already inside your fixed quote, and nobody is waiting 20 minutes for a bus with a pushchair and three suitcases. Blue Badge holders, or anyone with booked assistance, get 30 minutes free in Terminal Car Park 1, so tell us when you book if that applies. Our comparison of airport parking and taxis is worth a read if you are weighing up driving yourself.
