Out of the village on Fulmer Road to the A40, down to M40 Junction 1 at Denham, Junction 1A onto the box at Junction 16, and then clockwise instead of anticlockwise: past Junction 17 at Maple Cross, Junction 18 for the A404 towards Chorleywood and Amersham, Junction 20 for the A41, and off at Junction 21 where the M1 comes in. North on the M1 to Junction 10, onto the spur, out at Junction 10a and onto the A1081, the dual carriageway signed New Airport Way. The detail worth knowing sits right at the end. There is a roundabout before the tunnel on the airport approach where the airport's own advice is to ignore the sat-nav and follow the signs for the drop-off zone, and a driver who does not know that ends up in the wrong car park with a flight to catch. If the north-western quarter of the M25 is blocked, the A412 out of Iver Heath runs up through Denham to Maple Cross and rejoins at Junction 17. If the M1 itself is the problem, the A1081 comes down through Harpenden and St Albans instead. Around 50–65 minutes.
