The clockwise arc to the M11, and why Junction 8a is the one

Stansted is the longest of the five from Fulmer, and almost all of it happens on the M25. It starts the same short way: Fulmer Road, the A40, and the M40 to Junction 1 at Denham, where Junction 1A drops us on the M25 at Junction 16. From there we stay clockwise for most of the northern arc, past the M1 and the A1(M) and round the Hertfordshire and Essex side, before leaving at Junction 27 for the M11.

North on the M11, the junction you want is 8a. The airport signs two junctions, 8 and 8a, and its own advice is that 8a serves traffic arriving from the London direction, which is every car out of South Buckinghamshire. Junction 8, at Birchanger, comes first and also connects to the A120, so it is the way in when the 8a slip road is closed. The larger bail-out is the A414: if the north-eastern corner of the M25 between Junction 21 and Junction 27 has gone, it runs across country through St Albans, Hatfield, Hertford and Harlow and rejoins the M11 at Junction 7.

The bookings lean towards groups: four or five adults from the houses off Hay Lane and Fulmer Road travelling together, and business and production travellers working around Pinewood Studios on the A412 at Iver Heath. Early Stansted departures mean collecting while the village is still dark, and on the narrow stretch past King George's Field and the Black Horse we would rather sit outside a few minutes early than hunt for a gate in the small hours.

Parking at Stansted versus a car from Fulmer

At this distance the arithmetic changes. Driving yourself means about 85–100 minutes each way, fuel, a parking booking and, if you use Stansted's Mid Stay, a shuttle bus that the airport says takes around seven minutes to the terminal. Being dropped by a friend is not free either: the Express Set Down outside the terminal costs £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 after that since 19 March 2026, unless they use the free hour in Mid Stay. There is no comfortable rail version either: a car to Gerrards Cross or Slough, a run into London, a cross-city change and then the Stansted Express, with the luggage, which is why most people who ask about the train end up booking the car.

Getting the Fulmer to Stansted booking right
