Farnham Common to Stansted: time, route and fare

Allow around 90–105 minutes. We head up the A355 to M40 Junction 2, along to Junction 1A for the M25, and clockwise three quarters of the way round London before the M11 takes us north into Essex.

On paper this is the awkward one from Farnham Common, and in practice it is the run people are most relieved to hand over, because the alternative is the northern M25 in the dark followed by a car park to find at the far end. Every fare is agreed before you travel, with no meter and no surge pricing.

Local Knowledge

Why the Stansted run leaves Farnham Common the long way round

The first move is the same as a Luton job, up the A355 to Junction 2 of the M40 and along to Junction 1A for the M25 at Junction 16, but this time we stay on the clockwise carriageway a great deal longer, through the M1 interchange at Junction 21 and the A1(M) at Junction 23, to Junction 27, where the M11 strikes north into Essex. The airport's own directions send London-side drivers off at 8a and keep Junction 8 for traffic coming down from Cambridge.

Heading north, Junction 8 at Birchanger is reached first and it links to the A120 as well, so dropping off there is a workable way round a closure of the 8a slip. The larger fallback is the A414. If the north-eastern corner of the M25 is shut, the run across Hertfordshire from Hemel Hempstead through Hatfield and Hertford to Harlow rejoins the M11 at Junction 7.

There is a single terminal building, with the gates in satellites reached by walkway or an automated transit, so nothing can go wrong once you arrive. Our bookings on this route are mostly European city breaks and trips back to see family, and they gather at the two ends of the day. Have a look at the cars we run for a trip of this length, and the agreed-in-advance pricing in Farnham Common covers the return leg on the same terms.

Set-Down Charges

How much does it cost to drop off at Stansted?

The forecourt set-down is charged in bands rather than by the minute. Stansted's Express Set Down costs £10 for a visit of up to 15 minutes and £28 once it runs over, rates introduced on 19 March 2026 when the old £7 charge went. There are no barriers: cameras read the plate and the fee must be paid online or by phone by midnight the next day. Anyone dropping you in their own car can avoid it by using the Mid Stay car park, free for up to an hour, where a 24-hour shuttle bus reaches the terminal in about seven minutes. Our guide to UK airport drop-off charges has the full comparison.

Rail

Could you take the train from Farnham Common?

There is no station in the village. The nearest real option is Slough, where the Elizabeth line runs through central London to Liverpool Street; from there the Stansted Express takes about 48 minutes and runs every 15 minutes in the daytime. That is a car or bus to Slough, two trains and a platform change with your cases. For a single traveller with hand luggage at midday it can work; for a 6am flight or a family it rarely does. If you are weighing up airport parking against a taxi, that guide runs the numbers, and Farnham Common airport transfers lists every airport we serve from SL2.
