What route does the car take to Stansted?
From Gerrards Cross the car reaches the M25 at Junction 16 via the M40, then heads clockwise past the M1 and A1(M) interchanges to Junction 27, where the M11 begins. The M11 runs north towards Cambridge, and the airport is reached from it via the A120.
Because Stansted sits on the opposite side of London, your starting point in South Bucks makes a real difference. Denham is right by the M25 and sees 85–110 minutes and Iver 60–85, whereas Chalfont St Giles, further up the A413, is 92–107. The table at the foot of the page lists every town.
How does Stansted's terminal work?
Every airline uses the one main terminal, the Foster and Partners building that opened in 1991. The departure gates are in three satellite buildings beyond it, so check the gate on your boarding pass and leave time to reach it after security. For drop-offs there is only one building to aim for, which keeps the last few minutes of a long drive simple.
What time should I leave for a Stansted flight?
Stansted rewards a generous margin. The M25 between the M40 and the M11 is exposed to incidents and overnight roadworks, and there is no quick alternative once you are on it. Take your terminal arrival target (two hours before a short-haul departure is sensible), add 90–105 minutes and at least 30 minutes more.
- 06:25 Ryanair departure: in the terminal by 04:25, so leave Gerrards Cross at about 02:20.
- 11:00 departure on a weekday: in the terminal by 09:00 after the morning peak on the M25, so leave at about 06:40.
- 19:30 departure on a Friday: in the terminal by 17:30, leaving at about 15:10 to clear Friday traffic.

How much does it cost to drop off at Stansted?
Stansted's Express Set Down zone outside the terminal costs £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 for anything over 15 minutes. It is barrier-free, so nothing is paid on the way out: settle it online or on 03450 175046 by midnight the day after your visit. It cannot be paid in advance. An unpaid visit brings a £100 Parking Charge Notice, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
The free alternative is the drop-off area in the Mid Stay car park, served by a free shuttle bus to the terminal. For collections the airport sends drivers to the Green and Blue Short Stay car parks, which start at £13 for up to 30 minutes. On our transfers, whichever applies is covered by the fixed fare.
Where will my driver meet me at Stansted?
In the arrivals area of the terminal, with a name board. The driver parks in a Short Stay car park, times the walk in to your actual landing and helps with your bags back to the car. International arrivals include a free waiting period, useful when several flights land together and passport control slows down.
Which vehicle suits a Stansted run?
On a trip this long, comfort counts. Travellers on cabin-bag-only fares are well served by a BMW 5 Series or E-Class. A family with hold luggage and a buggy is better in the SEAT Alhambra, which seats up to six, or the V-Class for up to seven. Child and booster seats are available on request.
Is Stansted worth the longer drive from Gerrards Cross?
Only when the flight is. From Gerrards Cross, Stansted is 90–105 minutes, Luton 50–65 and Heathrow 20–35.
