What route does the driver take from Amersham?

Amersham to Heathrow
There are two sensible ways to Heathrow. One heads east on the A404 through Little Chalfont and Chorleywood to join the M25 at Junction 18, then runs south past the M40 interchange. The other drops south on the A355 through Coleshill to Beaconsfield, joins the M40 at Junction 2 and meets the M25 at Junction 16. Either way, Terminals 2 and 3 are reached from M25 Junction 15 and the M4 spur, while Terminals 4 and 5 come off at Junction 14. Allow 40–55 minutes. Heathrow charges £7 every time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off zone, private hire cars included, and the payment has to be made online or by phone by midnight the next day. If a relative drives you and forgets, Heathrow issues an £80 parking charge.
Amersham to Luton
Luton is the other airport Amersham people use most, at 45–60 minutes. The usual line is the A404 to M25 Junction 18, clockwise to Junction 21 and up the M1 to Junction 10 for the airport. Some drivers prefer the cross-country alternative through Chesham and the A41 towards Hemel Hempstead when the M25 north of Junction 18 is slow. Amersham to Gatwick and Stansted
Both mean a long stretch of M25, in opposite directions. For Gatwick it is anticlockwise past Heathrow to Junction 7 and down the M23 to Junction 9, 70–90 minutes in normal traffic, and Gatwick's drop-off zones charge £10 for up to 10 minutes. Stansted is clockwise round to Junction 27 and up the M11 to Junction 8, roughly 85–105 minutes; the Express Set Down there is £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 beyond that. City airport is 75–100 minutes by road, normally via the A40 into London and across to the A13 and the Royal Docks. Can you get from Amersham to the airports by train?
Yes, and Amersham is better placed than most Chiltern towns because it is the terminus of the Metropolitan line as well as a stop on Chiltern Railways' route to Marylebone. Metropolitan line trains run straight through Baker Street to Farringdon, King's Cross St Pancras and Liverpool Street, which cuts out a change on several airport journeys:
- Heathrow: Metropolitan line to Farringdon, then the Elizabeth line to the Heathrow terminals (one change)
- Luton: Metropolitan line to Farringdon or King's Cross St Pancras, Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway, then the DART shuttle (two changes)
- Gatwick: Metropolitan line to Farringdon, then Thameslink to Gatwick Airport (one change)
- Stansted: Metropolitan line to Liverpool Street, then the Stansted Express (one change)
That works well with a small case at a civilised hour. It works less well with two large suitcases and children, and not at all for a 6am departure, because Metropolitan line trains call at every station on the way in, off-peak there are only two an hour from Amersham, and an early flight leaves you relying on the first trains of the day.
