Milton's Cottage on Deanway is a Grade I listed, 16th-century timber-framed house where John Milton came in 1665 to escape the plague in London. He finished Paradise Lost while living there, and it is the only home of his that survives. Today it is a museum with a remarkable collection of first editions of his work.
Just outside the parish boundary, the Chiltern Open Air Museum rescues historic buildings that face demolition and rebuilds them on its site, with buildings ranging from medieval to modern. It makes a long day out, and a pre-arranged collection time saves waiting at the gate.
