From Amersham to the right Heathrow terminal: three routes and a timetable
Heathrow is roughly 24 miles from Amersham by road, and there are three sensible ways down. The choice is made on live conditions at pickup time, not locked in by a sat-nav the night before.
The A404 and M25 Junction 18
The usual run leaves Amersham-on-the-Hill on the A404, through Little Chalfont and Chorleywood, and joins the M25 at Junction 18. From there it is anticlockwise past Maple Cross and the M40 interchange at Junction 16.
The A413 through the Chalfonts
When the M25 north of Junction 16 is heavy, the driver follows the A413 down the Misbourne valley through Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter to the A40 and the Denham Roundabout, joining the M25 at Junction 16 via M40 Junction 1A. From Old Amersham in the valley it can be the more direct start.
The A355 to Beaconsfield
The A355 runs south from Amersham to M40 Junction 2 at Beaconsfield, and the M40 then leads east to the same Junction 16. It is a useful option when both the A404 and the A413 are slow.
Which exit for your terminal
All three routes meet the anticlockwise M25. For Terminals 2 and 3 we leave at Junction 15, follow the M4 east to Junction 4 and take the spur into the central tunnel. Terminals 4 and 5 are reached from Junction 14 instead: Terminal 4 along the A3113, Terminal 5 by its own road off the A3044. Tell us the terminal when you book, because correcting a wrong choice inside Heathrow takes far longer than it would anywhere else.
When to leave Amersham
For a departure to Europe at 06:30, a 03:40 pickup puts you at the terminal about two hours ahead, and the roads at that hour are as clear as they get. Long-haul flights between 09:00 and 11:00 on weekdays are harder, because the drive lands in the M25 morning peak; for a 10:00 departure we would collect around 05:45. Heathrow charges £7 every time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off zone, no waiting allowed in the zone, and an £80 parking charge if it is not paid by midnight the following day. The train is not a shortcut
Amersham station is a terminus of the Metropolitan line and a stop on Chiltern Railways' line to Marylebone, and at 147 metres it is the highest station on the London Underground. Both services run into London rather than towards the airports, so the rail alternative means crossing the city and heading back out west on the Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line or Heathrow Express, with luggage in tow the whole way. For a family or an early departure, a door-to-door car at a known price is the calmer option, and for a group splitting the fare it usually costs less than the connections would.
