Amersham to Luton Taxi
Fixed-price cars from Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill to London Luton Airport (LTN), around 45–60 minutes via the M25 and M1.
How long is a taxi from Amersham to Luton Airport?
Around 45–60 minutes. From Amersham the car takes the A404 east to junction 18 of the M25, turns clockwise for the M1 and leaves at junction 10 for the airport. You agree a fixed price when you book, and it does not change with the traffic.
Luton is closer to Amersham than many people expect. The town is already on the north-west side of London, so the drive to the M1 is short, and the Luton run is quicker than the drive to Gatwick or Stansted.
We pick up across both parts of town: the High Street in Old Amersham (HP7), and Amersham-on-the-Hill around the station (HP6). We also cover Chesham Bois, Hyde Heath and Little Chalfont. For local journeys around the town, our Amersham taxis are dispatched from the same office.

Junction 18 or Hemel Hempstead: the two routes from Amersham to Luton
Our usual route goes east on the A404 through Little Chalfont and Chorleywood and joins the M25 at junction 18. That puts the car on the north-west side of the M25, so it only goes past junctions 19 and 20 before the M1 turn at junction 21. From there we take the M1 north to junction 10. The airport spur to junction 10a leads onto the A1081 New Airport Way, the last dual carriageway before the terminal. On that final stretch the airport asks drivers to follow its signs rather than the sat-nav at the roundabout before the tunnel.
The alternative is useful when the M25 between junctions 18 and 21 is at a standstill. The A416 runs north from Amersham through Chesham Bois and Chesham to Berkhamsted, where it meets the A41. The A41 bypass then runs east to Hemel Hempstead, and the A414 crosses the town to junction 8 of the M1, two junctions south of the airport exit. It is a longer route on the map, but it avoids the busiest section of the M25 completely, and our drivers decide which way to go after checking live traffic on the night.
Luton passengers from Amersham tend to be families heading off for half term or the summer, couples on city breaks, and people on business trips to Europe. Many of those flights leave early, so many bookings are for a car at 3am or 4am. We arrange those the evening before, so the driver already has your address and flight details. Anyone flying regularly can use a corporate account and pay once a month instead of trip by trip.
Can I get from Amersham to Luton Airport by train?
Yes, but it takes longer than the drive. Amersham is the end of the Metropolitan line, and its trains run through Baker Street to King's Cross St Pancras without a change. At St Pancras you change to East Midlands Railway's Luton Airport Express, which takes around 22 minutes to Luton Airport Parkway, or to a Thameslink train. From the Parkway, the Luton DART takes a few minutes to reach the terminal and runs 24 hours a day.
That means going south-east into London and then back north, with at least two changes and your bags on crowded trains. It can work for someone travelling light in the middle of the day. It is much harder with a family, ski bags or a 6am departure, and in those cases a car is the practical choice.
Whichever way you go, Luton recommends arriving when your airline says, usually two to three hours before departure. With a 45–60 minute drive, a 7am flight with a two-hour check-in means leaving Amersham at about 4am. If you arrive at security between 3am and 3pm, the airport's free Prebook Security lets you book a 30-minute slot.
