Amersham to London City Airport Taxi
From Old Amersham or Amersham-on-the-Hill to London City (LCY) in around 75–100 minutes, at a fixed fare with your flight tracked.
How long is a taxi from Amersham to London City Airport?
A taxi from Amersham to London City Airport takes around 75–100 minutes, usually via the A40 and A13. It is one of the longer London City runs we quote, because the car has to come down from the Chilterns before it even reaches London traffic.
Amersham sits at the far end of the Metropolitan line, so the Tube is the obvious comparison. It works, but it means two changes and a long ride with your luggage. The car is one fixed price from your door to the terminal.
We collect from Old Amersham, Amersham-on-the-Hill and nearby Chesham Bois. For shorter local trips, see our Amersham taxi service, and for every airport from HP6 and HP7, Amersham airport transfers.

From the top of the Metropolitan line to the Royal Docks
There are two sensible ways out of Amersham towards London City, and the choice depends on where the traffic is. The first runs south on the A413 through Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter to Denham, where the M40 ends and the A40 carries on east into London. That is the line our 75–100 minute figure is based on. From the A40, the driver either stays with it through town or turns onto the A406 North Circular at the Hanger Lane Gyratory, which runs all the way round to Beckton and meets the A13 next to the Royal Docks.
The second option heads east on the A404 to Junction 18 of the M25 at Chorleywood, clockwise to the M1 and south to the North Circular at Staples Corner. It is more miles but can be the better call when the A413 or Western Avenue is blocked. Either way the finish is the same: the A13 and the local roads into the airport on Hartmann Road. The terminal is in Newham, inside the London-wide ULEZ, and outside the central Congestion Charge zone.
By rail, Amersham has both the Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways. The station is the highest on the whole Underground network, at 147 metres above sea level, and it sits in fare zone 9. The quickest rail route to the airport is the Metropolitan line to Baker Street, the Jubilee line to Canning Town and the DLR from there. For a day trip with a laptop bag and nothing else, some people do it. For an early departure or a late evening return, the car is simpler.
What should Amersham travellers know about flying from London City?
When should I arrive?
London City opens check-in two hours before departure and says there is no need to arrive earlier. Each airline sets its own closing deadline, so check yours, then add the 75–100 minute drive and a margin for traffic. Our guide to leaving times shows how to work it out.
Can I drop bags the night before?
If you are flying British Airways, KLM or Luxair before 10am, London City offers an overnight bag drop from 4pm the day before. From Amersham that is a long way to go twice, but it can help if you are staying in London the night before.
Is the Amersham station pickup an option?
Yes. If you are arriving back in Amersham by train and connecting to a flight later, our Amersham station taxi can collect you from the station as easily as from home.
