Down off the ridge and across London
Penn stands on a ridge of the Chiltern Hills, about three miles north-west of Beaconsfield and four miles east of High Wycombe, and every London City trip starts by coming down from it. The B474 runs through Knotty Green into Beaconsfield, where the M40 is joined at Junction 2. The motorway ends at the Denham Roundabout, Junction 1, and the road continues as the A40 towards London.
Once in west London, the driver chooses between staying on the A40 into town or taking the A406 North Circular from Hanger Lane round to Beckton. Both finish on the A13 in the Royal Docks, a few minutes from the terminal on Hartmann Road. A route through the centre in charging hours would enter the Congestion Charge zone, which is one reason the North Circular often makes sense even though the airport itself is outside that zone. London City is inside the ULEZ, which covers every London borough.
Because there is no station in Penn, the train is a weaker option than from most of our towns. You would first need to reach Beaconsfield or High Wycombe for a Chiltern train to Marylebone, then take the Bakerloo line to Baker Street, the Jubilee line to Canning Town and the DLR to the airport. That is four trains after the drive to the station.
