Penn to Stansted (STN)

Penn to Stansted by taxi: the direct answer

Allow around 95–115 minutes. Penn sits on the Chiltern ridge about three miles north-west of Beaconsfield, so the first stretch is the B474 down through Knotty Green to M40 Junction 2. After that it is the M40 east to the M25, clockwise across the top of London and north on the M11.

Penn has no railway station, which makes Stansted a long way by any other means. We collect from the village itself, Tylers Green, Penn Street, Forty Green and Winchmore Hill, right across the parish, for a fare agreed before you travel.

Local Knowledge

From the Chiltern ridge to M11 Junction 8a

Penn is 95–115 minutes from Stansted mostly because of the start. Before any motorway there is the B474 off the ridge, through Knotty Green into Beaconsfield and on to Junction 2 of the M40. From there it is east to Junction 1A and onto the M25 at Junction 16, then a long clockwise run through the Watford junctions, past the M1 at 21 and the A1(M) at 23, and off at Junction 27 onto the M11.

On the M11 the airport's instruction for London-side traffic is Junction 8a, the exit signed for Stansted and the A120 towards Colchester; Junction 8 is where it sends drivers coming from Cambridge. Driving north, you meet Junction 8 at Birchanger first, and because that junction links to the A120 too, it is where we leave if the 8a slip road has been closed. The deeper fallback is the A414: when the M25 north-east of the M1 is shut, it carries us across Hertfordshire via Hatfield and Hertford to the M11 at Junction 7.

The village roads matter at the start of the night. Penn's hamlets are spread along lanes and around commons, and a driver who knows where Holy Trinity Church, the Penn Street common or the Royal Standard of England at Forty Green are will not lose ten minutes looking for a house name at 3am.
