Which London airport suits a trip from Penn?
Heathrow is the obvious first choice from Penn: 30–45 minutes down the B474 and the M40, the UK's main long-haul hub and British Airways' home base. Luton, at 55–70 minutes, is the better bet for budget short-haul breaks. How far is each airport from Penn by car?
Typical off-peak journey times from Penn and Tylers Green (HP10). Morning rush hour and bank holiday Fridays add time, and we allow for that when we book you.
Which roads does a taxi use from Penn to the airport?
Almost every airport run from Penn starts the same way: down the B474 through Knotty Green to Beaconsfield and onto the M40 at Junction 2. From there it is roughly five miles east, with no junction in between, to the M25 interchange, and the motorway network does the rest.
Penn to Heathrow
M40 Junction 2 to Junction 1A, then south on the M25. Terminal 5 has its own exit at M25 Junction 14; Terminals 2 and 3 are reached by staying on to Junction 15 and taking the M4 spur into the central area. A practical note if someone offers to drive you instead: every entry into a Heathrow terminal drop-off lane now costs £7, paid online or by phone by midnight the next day. There are no barriers, just number-plate cameras, so it is easy to forget until the £80 penalty letter arrives.
Penn to Luton
The same M40 start, clockwise on the M25 from Junction 16 to Junction 21, then north on the M1 to Junction 10 and the airport approach road. Allow 55–70 minutes. At the terminal, Luton's Drop Off Zone is £9 for up to 12 minutes, then £1 per minute, and cars may stay no longer than 30 minutes; the free alternative is the Long Stay car park and a shuttle bus. Penn to Gatwick
From the M40, anticlockwise on the M25 past Heathrow and down to Junction 7, then the M23 to Junction 9 for the North and South Terminals: 80–95 minutes. Gatwick's forecourt drop-off costs £10 for the first 10 minutes. We book the Penn to Gatwick taxi with enough margin for the Heathrow stretch of the M25, the busiest part of the whole route.
Penn to Stansted and London City
Stansted is the longest run, 95–115 minutes, following the M25 clockwise to Junction 27 and the M11 to Junction 8. Its Express Set Down charges £10 for up to 15 minutes. Is there a train from Penn to Heathrow or Gatwick?
No, not directly, and Penn has no railway station of its own. The nearest stations are Beaconsfield and High Wycombe on the Chiltern Main Line, with Amersham on the Metropolitan line an option from the Penn Street side. A rail trip to the airport therefore starts with a lift to the station and includes at least two changes:
- Heathrow: Chiltern train from Beaconsfield to Marylebone, Bakerloo line to Paddington, then the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express
- Gatwick: Marylebone, then across London to Farringdon or Victoria for Thameslink or the Gatwick Express
- Luton: Marylebone, then King's Cross St Pancras for Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway and the DART shuttle
- Stansted: Marylebone, then Liverpool Street for the Stansted Express
