North or South: which Gatwick terminal do I need?
It depends on the airline, not the destination. Gatwick's official terminal list, checked in September 2026, splits the main carriers like this:
- North Terminal: easyJet, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, SWISS, Icelandair, WestJet, Air Transat, JetBlue and Condor.
- South Terminal: British Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling, Norwegian, Norse Atlantic, Jet2, Turkish Airlines, TAP Portugal and Air Europa.
- TUI uses both: flight numbers beginning TOM leave from the North Terminal, and those beginning BY from the South Terminal.

Which way does the driver go to Gatwick?
From Gerrards Cross the car joins the M40 near Denham, turns onto the M25 at Junction 16 and runs anticlockwise past Heathrow and Staines to Junction 7, where the M23 heads south. Gatwick connects directly to the M23 at Junction 9; the airport describes the M25 as about ten minutes away, with the A23 London to Brighton road as the fallback.
The M25 between the M40 and the M23 is one of the busiest parts of the motorway network, which is why each town's route guide gives a range. A clear night run sits at the short end. A Friday afternoon at the start of the school holidays is the long end, and occasionally beyond it.
What time should I set off for a Gatwick flight?
Start from when you want to be in the terminal, normally two hours before short-haul and three before long-haul. Add 70–85 minutes of driving and a margin; for Gatwick we would not plan on less than 30 minutes, because a single incident on the M25 can use that up.
- 06:30 easyJet flight, North Terminal: in the terminal by 04:30, so leave Gerrards Cross at about 02:35.
- 10:00 British Airways flight, South Terminal: in the terminal by 08:00, driving through the morning peak, so leave at about 05:50.
- 15:00 long-haul, North Terminal: in the terminal by 12:00, leaving at about 10:05 on lighter mid-morning roads.

What does Gatwick charge for drop-off, and is there a free option?
£10 for the first 10 minutes on the drop-off forecourt at either terminal, then £1 a minute up to 20 minutes, with a 30-minute maximum stay and a £30 daily cap. Cameras log the number plate. Payment is online, through AutoPay or on 0330 174 4503 by midnight the following day, and missing it brings a Parking Charge Notice. Registered Blue Badge holders are exempt.
The free route is the Long Stay car parks: two hours at no charge, with a free shuttle bus to the terminals. That works for a friend doing the drop, but it adds a bus ride with your cases. On a GX transfer the forecourt fee is covered by the fixed fare, so we pull up at the terminal door.
Where is the pick-up point at Gatwick?
Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall once you have your bags, then walks with you to the car in the Short Stay car park for that terminal. Gatwick's express pick-up bays are on Level 4 of Car Park 6 at the North Terminal and on the ground floor of Car Park 3 at the South Terminal, charged at Short Stay rates.

Which car for a Gatwick holiday with children and cases?
A family holiday from Gatwick usually means suitcases, car seats and a buggy as well as passengers. The SEAT Alhambra seats up to six and the Ford Tourneo up to eight, so two households travelling together can share one car and one fare. Should I fly from Gatwick or Heathrow?
If the same trip runs from both, Heathrow is about an hour nearer: 20–35 minutes from Gerrards Cross against 70–85 for Gatwick, and that hour counts on an early start. Gatwick earns the longer drive when your airline is only there, and easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Norse Atlantic, Jet2 and TUI do not fly from Heathrow.
