The Gerrards Cross run to Gatwick is mostly one carriageway
On a Gatwick transfer the first two miles matter least and the M25 matters most. From the east side of town the A40 Oxford Road runs through Tatling End to the Denham Roundabout and Junction 1 of the M40, and Junction 1A then passes you to the M25 at Junction 16. If you live on the Windsor Road or West Common side, it is often cleaner to take the A40 the other way to Beaconsfield, join the motorway at Junction 2 and come back east to the same interchange. The car then settles onto the anticlockwise carriageway for a long stretch past the M4, Heathrow, the M3 and the A3, leaving at Junction 7 for the M23. The airport sits at the end of a short spur off Junction 9, and when the M23 is closed the A23 Brighton road follows the same corridor in.
What time to leave Gerrards Cross for Gatwick
Our rule of thumb for a short-haul flight is to leave home about three and a half hours before departure: two hours at the airport, up to 85 minutes on the road and a margin for the M25. North or South, and the forecourt fee
The spur from the M23 ends at a roundabout serving the South Terminal; the North Terminal is further along Airport Way, and its drop-off zone is on the lower level between the Sofitel and the multi-storey car park. A mix-up costs far less than at Heathrow, because a free shuttle connects the two in about two minutes. Gatwick's forecourt charge, £10 for 10 minutes and then £1 a minute to a 30-minute maximum, applies to every car including ours, and it is included in the fare we quote.
