The E-Class seats up to five people in total, the driver plus four passengers. The rear bench technically takes three, but the centre position sits over the transmission tunnel, so it is best kept for a child or a short hop; for a relaxed chauffeured journey it is ideal with one to three passengers in the back. On the newer generation, rear kneeroom and legroom were increased over the previous model, so even taller passengers travel comfortably on a run to the airport. The standard petrol or diesel saloon has a 540-litre boot, which is joint class-leading among executive saloons, about ten litres more than a same-era BMW 5 Series or Audi A6. It is a square, well-shaped space with a wide, high-opening lid, so in practice it swallows two to three large suitcases plus hand luggage or soft bags, comfortably covering a couple or a small family's airport load. When you are carrying longer items and fewer people, the rear seats split-fold 40:20:40 to extend the space. One honest note: the plug-in hybrid version has a smaller boot, around 370 litres, because the battery sits under the boot floor, so for a heavy-luggage airport party we will put you in a car with the full 540 litres.
