How long is a taxi from Amersham to Gatwick?

Around 70–90 minutes. The car leaves town on the A404 through Little Chalfont to join the M25 at Junction 18 by Chorleywood, then follows the orbital anticlockwise round the western side of London to the M23 at Junction 7, and on to the airport spur.

Amersham sits at the far end of the Metropolitan line, and every train route to Gatwick means going into London and out again. A car from the door avoids that, and the fare is fixed at booking with Gatwick's forecourt charge already counted in.

We collect from both halves of the town: the High Street and Market Hall in Old Amersham down in the Misbourne valley, and Amersham-on-the-Hill around the station and Dr Challoner's Grammar School. Chesham Bois, Hyde Heath and the villages towards Great Missenden are covered too.

Local Knowledge

Round the M25 from Chorleywood: the Amersham route to Gatwick

Amersham joins the motorway further round the M25 than most of our towns. The A404 climbs out through Little Chalfont to Junction 18 at Chorleywood, and from there the car runs anticlockwise past Maple Cross at Junction 17 and the M40 interchange at 16, over the M4 and past the Heathrow junction, on beyond the M3 and the A3, and leaves at Junction 7 where the M23 heads for Crawley. Junction 9 of the M23 feeds a spur that ends at a roundabout next to the South Terminal; the North Terminal is a little further along Airport Way. When the Chorleywood end is congested, the alternative is the A413 down through the Chalfonts to Denham, onto the M40 at Junction 1 and the M25 at Junction 16. If the M23 is closed, the A23 London to Brighton road covers the same ground.

Is the train from Amersham to Gatwick any easier?

Amersham station is the terminus of the Metropolitan line and also has Chiltern Railways trains to Marylebone. The most direct rail route is the Metropolitan line to Farringdon, changing at Baker Street if your train terminates there, then a Thameslink service straight to Gatwick. On paper that is one or two changes; in practice it is escalators and crowded platforms with a suitcase in each hand. For a family, or for any flight before the first trains, the car is the realistic option. If you are travelling in the other direction and want picking up off a train, we also do pre-booked pickups at Amersham station.

Leaving Amersham for an early flight

Suppose your flight leaves at 6.20am. Being at the terminal two hours ahead means arriving around 4.20am, and with up to 90 minutes on the road plus a buffer for overnight M25 roadworks, the car should collect at about 2.35am. At that hour the hill down from Amersham-on-the-Hill is empty and the drive is at its most predictable. In winter it is worth adding a little more; our winter airport travel advice explains why.

Gatwick's drop-off charge and terminals

Gatwick charges every vehicle that uses its terminal drop-off zones: £10 for up to 10 minutes, £1 for each extra minute, and a 30-minute maximum stay, payable online by midnight the day after. The Long Stay car parks allow free drop-off for up to two hours with a shuttle bus, and Blue Badge holders are exempt. With us the forecourt charge is simply part of the quote. The two terminals are linked by a free shuttle taking about two minutes, so giving us the wrong one is not a disaster, but we check your airline anyway.

Gatwick is only one of the airports we run from the town. Heathrow is a shorter trip, covered on our Amersham to Heathrow page, and the full list is on Amersham airport transfers. For everyday journeys around HP6 and HP7 there is our Amersham taxi service, and trips beyond the airports, such as a cruise port, come under long-distance travel.

FAQ

Amersham to Gatwick taxi questions

How long does a taxi from Amersham to Gatwick take?

Around 70–90 minutes. The usual route is the A404 to M25 Junction 18 at Chorleywood, then anticlockwise round the M25 to the M23 at Junction 7.

Which way do you go if the M25 at Chorleywood is busy?

We take the A413 through the Chalfonts to Denham, join the M40 at Junction 1 and move onto the M25 at Junction 16, which rejoins the same anticlockwise route.

Can I take the Metropolitan line from Amersham to Gatwick?

Yes, with changes. Take the Metropolitan line to Farringdon, changing at Baker Street if the train terminates there, then Thameslink direct to Gatwick. With heavy luggage or children a car is usually simpler.

What time should I leave Amersham for a 6.20am Gatwick flight?

Around 2.35am. That allows up to 90 minutes on the road, a buffer for overnight roadworks and arrival about two hours before a short-haul departure.

Is Gatwick's drop-off charge included?

Yes. Gatwick charges £10 for up to 10 minutes on the forecourt and £1 per minute after that, to a maximum of 30 minutes. It is included in your fixed Amersham fare.

Do you collect from Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill?

Yes, from both, and from Chesham Bois, Hyde Heath, Little Chalfont and the surrounding villages. We also collect from Amersham station.

Can you pick me up from Gatwick and bring me back to Amersham?

Yes. Send us the flight number; we track it, meet you in arrivals and allow free waiting time on international flights, all at the agreed fixed fare.
