How do you get from Penn to Gatwick without a car of your own?

By pre-booked taxi, for most people. The village has no station, so the train means getting to Beaconsfield first and then crossing London. Our driver instead takes the B474 down through Knotty Green to the M40 at Beaconsfield, then the M25 anticlockwise to the M23, in around 80–95 minutes.

The fare is agreed at booking. It includes the fee Gatwick charges to drop passengers at its terminal forecourts, and it stays the same if the M25 is slow on the day.

We collect across the parish: around Holy Trinity Church on the ridge and Widmer Pond, from Tylers Green, Penn Street, Forty Green by the Royal Standard of England, Winchmore Hill and Knotty Green, and on to Beaconsfield and Hazlemere.

Local Knowledge

From the Penn ridge to the M23: how the Gatwick run works

Penn sits high on the ridge between Beaconsfield and High Wycombe, about three miles north-west of Beaconsfield, and the first job on a Gatwick transfer is getting down off it. The B474 takes the car through Knotty Green into Beaconsfield and onto the M40 at Junction 2, by Beaconsfield services. It runs east to Junction 1A and joins the M25 at Junction 16, then carries on anticlockwise past the M4, the Heathrow exit and the M3, leaving at Junction 7 for the M23. The airport spur leaves the M23 at Junction 9 and finishes at the South Terminal roundabout, with the North Terminal further on along Airport Way. If the M25 near Heathrow is badly held up, a driver can go south from Beaconsfield on the A355 through Farnham Common to the M4 at Slough and join the orbital at Junction 15 instead.

Why there is no easy train from Penn

The nearest station is Beaconsfield, on Chiltern Railways to Marylebone, and the nearest Underground is the Metropolitan line at Amersham. Either way you still have to cross London, to Victoria for the Gatwick Express or to a Thameslink station such as Farringdon or St Pancras, before heading south. Add the drive to the station and back, and a short-haul holiday starts to look like a day of travel. If you do take the train for another trip, we offer pickups at Beaconsfield station, and for everyday runs there is our Penn and Tylers Green taxi service.

When to leave Penn for a winter departure

Take a 7.40am flight in December. You want to be at the terminal around 5.40am, so with up to 95 minutes of driving and a buffer, the car should collect at about 3.50am. On frosty mornings the ridge roads can be slower than the motorway, so for winter departures we would lean towards the earlier side of that. Our guide to Christmas and New Year airport travel covers the festive peak.

Dropping off at Gatwick

Both terminals have drop-off forecourts watched by number-plate cameras. Gatwick charges £10 for the first 10 minutes, then £1 for every minute after, and nobody may stay beyond 30 minutes; the charge must be paid by midnight the next day. That is included in our fare. North and South are linked by a free shuttle that runs through the night and takes around two minutes, so a terminal change is a short hop rather than a problem.
