Amersham to Stansted (STN)

How long is the drive from Amersham to Stansted?

Around 85–105 minutes. Amersham has its own junction sign on the orbital: Junction 18 is signed for Amersham and Chorleywood, so the car follows the A404 east through Little Chalfont and Chorleywood onto the M25, stays clockwise across Hertfordshire and turns north up the M11 at Junction 27.

We pick up from both halves of the town, the High Street in Old Amersham down in the Misbourne valley and the roads around the station on the Hill, and from Chesham Bois and Hyde Heath. The price is agreed before you book, for the whole run.

The Route

From the A404 to M11 Junction 8a

The usual line leaves Amersham-on-the-Hill on the A404, runs through Little Chalfont and Chorleywood, and joins the M25 at Junction 18. For a house in Old Amersham, at the southern end of town, the driver may instead take the A413 down through the Chalfonts to Denham and the M40, entering the M25 at Junction 16; which one wins depends on the hour and what the motorway is doing. Either way the rest is the same long clockwise run past the M1 at Junction 21 and the A1(M) at Junction 23, off at Junction 27 and north on the M11.

Stansted's directions tell anyone approaching from London to use Junction 8a, which is signed for Stansted and the A120 east, and to keep Junction 8 for traffic from Cambridge. On the northbound carriageway Junction 8, by Birchanger, arrives first and links to the A120 as well, so it is the way in if the 8a slip is closed. If the M25 between the M1 and the M11 is shut, the A414 through St Albans, Hatfield and Hertford is the diversion, meeting the M11 at Junction 7 by Harlow.

Stansted itself is simple to arrive at: a single terminal building designed by Foster and Partners, with gates in satellite buildings reached by walkway or transit, so there is only one place for the car to go.

Train or Car

Is the Metropolitan line a good way to Stansted from Amersham?

It is the best rail option in our area, and it still involves a change. Amersham is the end of the Metropolitan line, and trains running through to Aldgate call at Liverpool Street, where the Stansted Express departs every 15 minutes in the daytime and takes around 48 minutes. With a small bag at midday, that is a fair choice. The drawback is the length of the ride from Amersham into the City before you even reach the Express, and it helps little for a dawn departure. For a family, a heavy case or a 6am flight, a car from your door usually makes more sense. If you are travelling from the station itself, Amersham station pickups can be booked the same way.

Before You Fly

Timing, check-in deadlines and the drop-off charge

Stansted recommends reaching security at least two hours before your scheduled departure. With 85–105 minutes on the road and a margin, a 06:30 departure means leaving Amersham at about 02:30. Ryanair, the biggest airline at Stansted, currently closes bag drop 40 minutes before departure and moves that to 60 minutes from 10 November 2026, and Stansted opens Ryanair's international check-in desks three hours ahead.

At the terminal, the barrier-free Express Set Down has charged £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 after that since 19 March 2026, paid online or by phone by midnight the next day. Free drop-off is available in the Mid Stay car park for up to an hour, with a 24-hour shuttle bus of about seven minutes. Our 2026 drop-off charges guide compares every London airport, and which London airport is cheapest to fly from looks at whether Stansted's fares justify the longer drive.
