How close is Slough to Heathrow, and when is another airport better?
Heathrow is right on Slough's doorstep: about 5 miles away and normally 20–30 minutes by car along the M4, which makes it the default airport for the town. Gatwick is the next most practical at 60–85 minutes, thanks to the direct M4 and M25 link. Luton and Stansted are north of London and take 55–75 and 95–120 minutes, so they are worth it mainly for airline or price reasons. London City, 75–105 minutes away, suits a morning meeting in Docklands or the City.
Slough is a town of over 140,000 people where the M4, M40 and M25 all meet, and it covers far more ground than most visitors expect: Upton and Salt Hill near the centre, Chalvey, Cippenham to the west, Britwell and Wexham to the north, and Langley and Colnbrook out towards the airport. Slough to the airports: typical drive times
Off-peak times from central Slough (SL1). From Langley and Colnbrook, Heathrow is a little quicker; from Britwell or Cippenham, allow a few minutes more.
What is the quickest way from Slough to each airport?
Slough has three M4 junctions: Junction 7 for the west of town, Junction 6 via the A355 Tuns Lane for the centre, and Junction 5 at Langley. Your driver joins at whichever is nearest, then uses the M4 and M25 for four of the five London airports.
Heathrow
For Terminals 2 and 3, the M4 runs east to Junction 4 and the airport spur takes you into the central terminal area. For Terminal 5, leave the M4 at Junction 4B and follow the M25 south to Junction 14. If the M4 is closed, the A4 Bath Road through Colnbrook is the fallback. Either way, 20–30 minutes is typical. The short distance tempts plenty of people to ask for a lift, but every entry into a Heathrow terminal drop-off zone now costs £7, and taxis and private hire vehicles pay it too. It is charged by number-plate camera and must be paid by midnight the following day.
Gatwick
M4 to Junction 4B, then the M25 anticlockwise past Heathrow, Staines and Leatherhead to Junction 7, and the M23 to the airport at Junction 9. That is 55–80 minutes; the range is mostly down to how busy the M25 is around Heathrow. Gatwick's drop-off costs £10 for 10 minutes. Book the Slough to Gatwick taxi.
Luton and Stansted
For Luton, allow 55–75 minutes: either the M4 to the M25 and north, or the A412 up to the M40 at Denham and onto the M25 at Junction 16, then the M1 from Junction 21 to Junction 10. Luton charges £9 for up to 12 minutes in its Drop Off Zone. Stansted is 95–120 minutes, following the M25 clockwise to Junction 27 and the M11 to Junction 8, where the Express Set Down costs £10 for up to 15 minutes. London City
London City is the one airport where the car stays on ordinary roads for a large part of the trip. The usual line follows the M4 into London and the A4, then crosses the city towards Docklands; the alternative is the A40 and North Circular round to the A13. Is there a direct train from Slough to Heathrow?
No. Slough station is on the Elizabeth line and Great Western Railway, but the Elizabeth line trains that call at Slough run between Maidenhead or Reading and central London, not to the airport. To reach Heathrow by rail you take an Elizabeth line train east to Hayes and Harlington and change there for a Heathrow service. The other airports are easier than you might expect, because the Elizabeth line runs straight through central London:
- Gatwick and Luton: Elizabeth line direct to Farringdon, then Thameslink south to Gatwick or north to Luton Airport Parkway and the DART
- Stansted: Elizabeth line direct to Liverpool Street, then the Stansted Express
- London City: Elizabeth line into east London, then a DLR connection to London City Airport station
With a light bag and a daytime flight, the one-change routes to Gatwick and Stansted are reasonable. Heathrow is the odd one out: it is the closest airport by road, but the least convenient by train from Slough, so for Heathrow the car wins comfortably.
