M4 east, then round or through London
Slough has three M4 junctions, and which one we use depends on where you are. Junction 5 serves Langley and Colnbrook, Junction 6 takes the A355 into central Slough, and Junction 7 is signed for Slough West. From any of them the motorway runs east past Heathrow and ends at Chiswick, where the road continues as the A4 into central London.
At Chiswick the North Circular begins, and that is the main decision on this route. The A406 runs all the way round the north of London to Beckton, where it meets the A13 beside the Royal Docks, and it keeps well clear of the Congestion Charge zone. Continuing along the A4 into town is shorter on the map, but a route through central London during charging hours would enter the zone. The airport itself, on Hartmann Road in Newham, is outside the Congestion Charge zone but inside the London-wide ULEZ.
Slough is one of the few towns we serve with a direct Elizabeth line link towards the airport. Trains from Slough, Burnham and Langley run through central London to Custom House. From there, the DLR goes two stops to Canning Town, where you change for London City Airport. The Elizabeth line passes about 300 metres south of the airport but does not stop there.
Is the Elizabeth line from Slough better than a taxi to London City?
It depends on your luggage and your flight time. The Elizabeth line gets you from Slough to Custom House without changing, which is a genuine advantage. The DLR connection at Canning Town is the awkward part, especially with cases, and the first trains of the day may not suit the earliest departures.
A car goes straight to the terminal. London City opens check-in two hours before departure and the airport says security takes about five minutes on average, so if you arrive on time by car there is little waiting around. Remember the airport does not fly between Saturday lunchtime and Sunday lunchtime.
If you usually fly from Heathrow, our Slough to Heathrow taxi page covers that 20–30 minute run, and Slough airport transfers lists every airport we serve from the town. Our guide to corporate taxi accounts explains the business billing options.
