When the M4 is slow
If the motorway is queuing through Junction 5, the A4 through Colnbrook gives a reliable fallback that runs almost to the airport boundary and on along the Bath Road to the central tunnel.
When to leave Slough
With a 20–30 minute drive, a 06:00 departure to Europe needs a car at about 03:30 to have you at the terminal two hours ahead. For a weekday long-haul flight at 09:00, collect at around 05:30; the M4 between Junctions 6 and 4 is in its morning peak by then, and the extra half hour costs nothing on a fixed fare.

Heathrow charges £7 each time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off zone, with no waiting allowed and an £80 parking charge if it is not paid by midnight the next day. It is included in our fare. Train and bus alternatives from Slough
Slough has genuine public transport options to Heathrow, and they are worth knowing. The Elizabeth line calls at Slough, Langley and Burnham, but the airport trains branch off further east, so the rail route involves a change at Hayes & Harlington. Heathrow lists several local buses: route 7 via Langley and Colnbrook, route 5 via Datchet and Poyle, and route 704 from Maidenhead via Burnham and Langley all run to Terminal 5, while route A4 via Langley and Colnbrook runs to Heathrow Central Bus Station for Terminals 2 and 3. The RailAir RA1 coach to Heathrow starts from Reading station and does not stop in Slough. For light luggage the bus is good value. For a family with suitcases or a first-wave departure, being driven from home wins.
