Sir Henry Peek bought the land in 1879 and passed it to the City of London Corporation, which still owns it, and today the 374-hectare reserve is a National Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. The pollarded beeches are several hundred years old, and film crews have used the woods for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Goldfinger and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, although filming is limited to 20 days a year.
